Cleaning natural stone showers, whether it is travertine, limestone, or marble, is easy when using preventative methods and routine maintenance. If you take a little extra time on a daily or weekly basis to keep your stone showers clean, you will avoid pesky problems in the future such as stains, soap scum buildup, mold, mildew, and etching of the surface. There are only two steps a homeowner should need to take with a properly installed and sealed natural stone shower in order to prevent stains, mold, and mildew:

Proper Care for Stone Tile Showers

  1. Always make sure the grout, silicon, or caulking around the walls and floor stays intact. This prevents water from getting behind the surface. If these bonding agents crack, peel, or crumble, water will be able to get behind the tile creating potential mold and mildew. Since it is natural for walls to expand and contract, it is inevitable that you will need to do a simple touch up of caulk along the walls and shower flooring as routine maintenance.
  2. Perhaps the second most beneficial and simple thing a homeowner can do is to wipe down the walls of the shower after every use. This may seem like it would be a nuisance, but once the habit has been formed, it only takes a minute. The best method would be to use a squeegee, but a dry towel will also work. By keeping the walls of the natural stone shower dry in between uses, you are ensuring that the entire shower has time to thoroughly dry, preventing the potential for mold or mildew.

By following these two simple steps, you are executing the most important things possible in order to prevent future problems. The next step is to use a mild, pH balanced cleaner that will condition the stone. Stone is made of minerals that adversely react to most bathroom cleaners because of the acids and abrasive chemicals used to make them. When cleaning travertine, limestone, or granite, the use of acidic or abrasive cleaners will not only etch the surface of the stone, but they also eat away at the grout. As explained earlier, grouting is extremely important in keeping water from seeping behind the stone, so it is detrimental to use cleaners with acids that will reduce the effectiveness of the grout.

That said, household bathroom and tub cleaners are not a good choice to clean a natural stone shower. Since all natural stone is porous, an organic cleaner is the best option since the stone is going to partially absorb what you clean it with. Travertine, limestone, marble, and granite all come from the earth and are obviously organic, so using an organic stone cleaner will ensure that no harsh ingredients are altering the chemical makeup of the stone. The benefit of using a stone cleaner and conditioner is that the conditioning agents will help to fill the porous surface in order to prevent staining, as well as to promote the longevity and beauty of the travertine, limestone, marble, or granite shower for years to come.
